The results of TURKSTAT’s February 2022 Household Labor Force Survey (HLFS) were published on April 11, 2022. The seasonally adjusted narrow-defined unemployment rate was 10.7 percent, while the seasonally adjusted broad-defined unemployment rate (idle workforce) was 21.8 percent.
According to TURKSTAT, the number of unemployed persons aged 15 and over in Turkey (seasonally adjusted) decreased by 178 thousand in February 2022 compared to the previous month and became 3 million 579 thousand. According to the calculation by DİSK-AR, the seasonally adjusted broadly defined number of unemployed was 7 million 989 thousand people in February 2022. Compared to the pre-pandemic period, the number of unemployed increased by 959 thousand. According to TURKSTAT, unemployment, which was 12.6% in February 2020, dropped to 10.7 percent in February 2022. However, the broad definition of unemployment rose from 20.7 percent to 21.8 percent.
According to İŞKUR data, in the one-year period between February 2021 and February 2022, the number of registered unemployed increased from 2 million 863 thousand to 3 million 188 thousand and increased by 325 thousand people. According to TURKSTAT, the narrowly defined number of unemployed has decreased by 623 thousand between these periods in the last year. While the number of registered unemployed in İŞKUR increased by 11.4 percent in the last year, the number of unemployed in TÜİK decreased by 15 percent. It is against the normal flow of life that the two data are so different. On the other hand, with the increase in the number of registered unemployed to 3 million 635 according to İŞKUR March 2022 data, the number of registered unemployed in March 2022 exceeded the survey-based number of unemployed in February 2022 (3 million 579 thousand).
In terms of unemployment rates by gender, female unemployment continues to be the highest category of all unemployment types. While the seasonally adjusted narrow definition unemployment rate was 9.3% for men, it rose to 13.4% for women. The broad definition of unemployment (idle labor) is 18 percent for men and 30 percent for women. The difference between the broad definition of female unemployment and the broad definition of male unemployment is 10.8 points.
