TurkStat’s November 2022 Household Labor Force Survey (HLFS) results were published on January 10, 2023. The seasonally adjusted narrow-defined unemployment rate was 10.2 percent, while the seasonally adjusted broad-defined unemployment rate (idle labor force) was 20.8 percent. According to TurkStat, the number of narrow-defined unemployed (seasonally adjusted) persons aged 15 and over in Turkey increased by 23 thousand persons in November 2022 compared to the previous month and became 3 million 576 thousand persons.
According to the calculation made by DISK-AR based on TURKSTAT data, the seasonally adjusted broad-defined number of unemployed people was 7 million 872 thousand in November 2022. According to TurkStat, unemployment was 13.3 percent in November 2019 and 10.2 percent in November 2022. However, in the same years, broad-defined unemployment rose from 18.4 percent to 20.8 percent.
On the other hand, the vast majority of the unemployed cannot benefit from unemployment benefit due to the harsh conditions for benefiting from unemployment benefit and the misuse of unemployment insurance resources. In November 2022, TurkStat announced the total number of narrowly defined unemployed as 3 million 576 thousand people. According to İŞKUR’s data for November 2022, the number of people who could receive unemployment benefit remained at 408 thousand in this month. Thus, only 11.4 percent of the officially unemployed were able to receive unemployment insurance in November 2022.
According to the November 2022 HLFS data, the highest category of unemployment was broad-defined female unemployment with 27.5 percent. The second highest unemployment category was young female (15-24 years old) unemployment with 23.9 percent.
Summary findings from the report are as follows:
- 90 percent of the unemployed cannot benefit from unemployment benefit
- Broad-defined female unemployment is the highest category among unemployment types!
- The number of broad unemployed is 7 million 872 thousand!
- The difference between broad and narrow unemployment is 10.6 points!
