DİSK-Ar Unemployment and Employment Outlook Report (February 2024) was published:

Broad-defined unemployment has skyrocketed: Total 9.7 million!

TURKSTAT’s December 2023 Household Labor Force Survey (HLFS) results were published on February 12, 2024. The seasonally adjusted narrow-defined unemployment rate was 8.8 percent, while the seasonally adjusted broad-defined unemployment rate (idle labor force) was 24.7 percent. According to TURKSTAT, the number of narrow-defined unemployed people aged 15 and above (seasonally adjusted) in Turkey was 3 million 98 thousand in December 2023.

According to the calculation made by DISK-AR based on TURKSTAT data, the number of seasonally adjusted broad-defined unemployed was 9 million 656 thousand in December 2023. In December 2023, there was an explosion in broad-defined unemployment. Although the number of narrow-defined unemployed decreased both annually and monthly, the number of broad-defined unemployed increased by 1 million people monthly and 1.5 million people annually. The number of broad-defined unemployed, which was 8.1 million in December 2022, was 8.7 million in November 2023 and 9.7 million in December 2023. This increase in the number of broad-defined unemployed is due to time-dependent underemployment and the increase in the number of potential labor force, which includes the hopeless, those who are not looking for work but are ready to work, and those who are looking for work but cannot start working immediately.

Summary findings from the report are as follows:
