The annual results of the Household Labor Force Survey (HLFS) of the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) for the year 2021 were published on March 23, 2022. The annual data for 2021 are based on the new methodology of TURKSTAT. As it is known, TurkStat has been announcing monthly and quarterly data separately since March 2021. Quarterly data is broader, while monthly data is more limited.
TurkStat announced that there was an increase of 2.1 million people in employment in the one-year period between 2020 and 2021. Thus, the number of employed people was announced as 28 million 797 thousand in 2021. The employment rate, which was 42.7 percent in 2020, was announced as 45.2 percent with an increase of 2.5 points. However, the official employment data of TURKSTAT, like the narrow-defined unemployment data, show only a limited part of the picture. Employment data alone do not provide information on the nature of employment. For this reason, alternative employment calculations are also needed!
Unemployment and employment data form a whole. Just looking at unemployment is not enough to fully understand the developments in the labor market. As it is known, TURKSTAT regularly announces the number and rates of employment. However, it is seen that the announced employment rates are far from giving sufficient information about the nature of employment. For this reason, DİSK-AR started to calculate a new employment data by making a distinction according to the nature of employment. The name of the employment data that DİSK-AR has just started to calculate: Registered and Full-Time Employment (KATİ). SOLID does not reveal all employment, but the proportion of registered and full-time workers.
