TurkStat’s July 2023 Household Labor Force Survey (HLFS) results were published on September 11, 2023. The seasonally adjusted narrow-defined unemployment rate was 9.4 percent, while the seasonally adjusted broad-defined unemployment rate (idle labor force) was 22.7 percent. According to TurkStat, the number of narrow-defined unemployed (seasonally adjusted) persons aged 15 and above in Turkey was 3 million 291 thousand in July 2023.
According to the calculation made by DISK-AR based on TURKSTAT data, the number of seasonally adjusted broad-defined unemployed people was 8 million 742 thousand in July 2023. According to TurkStat, narrow-defined unemployment, which was 13.9 percent in July 2019 before the pandemic, was 9.4 percent in July 2023. However, in the same years, broad-defined unemployment rose from 19.3 percent to 22.7 percent. In the last 1 year, the number of broad-defined unemployed increased from 8.4 million to 8.7 million. After the Covid-19 pandemic, the broad-defined unemployment rate increased by 3.4 points and the number of broad-defined unemployed increased by 2 million 136 thousand people.
According to July 2023 HLFS data, the highest category of unemployment was broad-defined female unemployment with 31.1 percent. The second highest unemployment category was broadly defined unemployment of young women with 23.1 percent. In July 2023, the third highest unemployment category was broad-defined unemployment with 22.7 percent.
In July 2023, the gap between narrow and broad unemployment rates was 13.3 percentage points. The most important reason for the widening gap between narrow and broad unemployment is the increase in the number of time-based underemployment, the number of those who have lost hope, those who are not looking for work but are ready to work, and those who are looking for work but are unable to start work.
