IndustriALL Global Union is following the crisis in Peru with grave concern and stands in solidarity with affiliates and other trade union and social organizations that have mobilized to demand solutions to the country’s democratic collapse.
In a letter addressed to the country’s authorities, general secretary Atle Høie repudiated the criminalization of social protest and the violence carried out by the police and armed forces that has already caused more than 20 deaths.
Høie also expressed his support for the demands of social organizations to put an end to the crisis.
In letters addressed to President Dina Boluarte and Congress president José Williams, Høie supports proposals calling for:
- the lifting of the state of emergency, respect for the right to peaceful social protest and accountability for those responsible for the deaths of protesters
- anticipated general elections to restore democratic institutions
- the adoption of a new constitution that forges a democratic and inclusive state based on full respect for human and labor rights as an essential condition to ensure lasting social justice
- the immediate release of Pedro Castillo
IndustriALL is urging authorities to open dialogue and build commitments with social movements and Peruvian society in order to create a fairer and more inclusive society.
