The Household Labor Force Survey (HLFS) of the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) for the 2nd quarter of 2022 was published on August 15, 2022. The second quarter of 2022 covers the months of April, May and June 2022 and is based on the new methodology of TURKSTAT. As it is known, TurkStat has been announcing monthly and quarterly data separately since March 2021. Quarterly data has a broader scope, while monthly data is more limited.
TurkStat announced that there was an increase of 765 thousand people in seasonally adjusted employment in the one-year period between the first quarter of 2021 and the first quarter of 2022. Thus, the seasonally adjusted number of employed people, which was announced as 30 million 775 thousand in the 1st quarter of 2022, was calculated as 30 million 10 thousand in the 2nd quarter of 2022. The seasonally adjusted employment rate, which was 46.6 percent in the first quarter of 2022, increased by 1.1 points to 47.7 percent in the second quarter of 2022. However, the official employment data of TURKSTAT, like the narrowly defined unemployment data, show only a limited part of the truth about the labor market. Employment data alone do not provide information on the nature of employment. For this reason, there is a need for alternative employment calculations as well as alternative unemployment calculations!
While the official employment rate of TURKSTAT was announced as 47.7 percent in the 1st quarter of 2022, the Registered Full-Time Employment (KATI) rate calculated by DİSK-AR based on Turkstat data was 33.3 percent. While the official employment rate for women was 30.4 percent, the STI rate was 18.4 percent, and the official employment rate for men was 65.3 percent, while the STI rate was 48.5 percent.
